3 Ways Drama and Film School Education Builds Self-Confidence

3 Ways Drama and Film School Education Builds Self-Confidence

“When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.” – NFL legend and actor, Joe Namath

Self-confidence is one of the most important skills that parents and teachers can encourage in students of all ages. Students who possess self-confidence are more likely to:

  • Develop healthy, long-lasting friendships.

  • Perform well in school and extracurricular activities.

  • Assume leadership roles.

  • Demonstrate persistence in and out of school.

  • Try new activities.

  • Resist negative peer-pressure.

While some students enter the classroom with more natural self-confidence than others, there are many great ways to help students develop the necessary tools to build their confidence. At Marbella Film School, we see the incredible power of film every single day in the classrooms we have visited. Our film-based classes are specifically designed to teach students positive behaviour skills and build self-confidence along the way.

How exactly does the film school build self-confidence?

1. Performing reduces social anxiety: Getting up in front of an audience of takes guts – and getting through an experience like that makes walking up to a group of kids at recess seem easier! Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between acting and social confidence. Sometimes, facing a fear head-on is exactly what a student needs to get over it.

2. Improvisation builds problem-solving skills: Improvisation is all about thinking quickly and navigating problem situations with grace and poise (and sometimes, when the moment is right, even humour). Improv teaches kids to never see a stumble as a fall, and helps them discover the ways they can “say yes” to whatever is happening and pick themselves back up. This persistence and tenacity is central to developing self-confidence, and encourages students to view every situation as an opportunity to succeed and entertain.

3. Theatre thrives on creativity: In order to create an interesting scene or portray a realistic character, students need to tap into their inner well of creativity. Discovering talents and abilities, and putting those skills to use, is a fantastic way to build self-confidence. Kids who find success and passion in their creative accomplishments are more likely to seek out new and different ways to engage their creative side in the future!
